Week 08 // Research Exemplar 02 - Kalundewa Retreat

Kalundewa Retreat by Sri Lankan architect Sanath Liyanage embraces the natural conditions of its site with sensitivity and simplicity.  A series of transparent pavilions that takes advantage of the breathtaking views and natural beauty of its location to enhance relaxation and leisure, a modern tribute to Geoffrey Bawa.

Week 08 // Research Exemplar 01 - Tseshaht Health Centre

Lubor Trubka Associates' design of a community health facility utilising the healing properties of wood is a relevant exemplar of how a health focused scheme can embrace its natural surroundings. A strong connection to nature is evident with open and transparent pavilions.

Identifying site conditions & possible schedule of accommodation

Sketch of Paddington Central - existing semi-enclosed walkways

Considering the scale and contextual relationship of Paddington Central with its location it was identified that there are a number of characteristics of the development that are very positive and would continue to be relevant in any future development of the site.

The layout of the facilities seem to consist of spaces that are linked with a series of verandahs and semi-enclosed walkways that allow for breeze and diffused natural light.  There is an abundance of vegetation that surrounds the development which screens the current carparking facilities from adjacent residential properties.

I envisage that in developing a scheme for a holistic health focused scheme that further embracing and enhancing these characteristics would allow for a more engaging development, namely by activating the Morris Street and Warmington Street facades with spaces which allow for circulation, activity and greater transparency.

Week 07 // Project Direction - Research Focus

CSIRO global trends report from which two trends have been identified for further focus and as a basis from which to develop a scheme surrounding the concept of a sub-urban health retreat -

Megatrend No. 6 // Great Expectations

A consumer, societal, demographic and cultural megatrend –

* the rising demand for experiences over products and the rising importance of social relationships.

Retail turnover is growing in the experience oriented sectors and contracting in the products oriented sectors.

* expectation for personalised services meeting unique needs whilst being delivered better and faster en masse.

* Social relationships will hold increased importance given the potential for
social media and digital communication burnout and the desire for face-to-face interaction.

Megatrend No. 4 // Forever Young

* Lifestyle related illnesses is on the rise. Deaths from non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases, will increase from 59 percent of total deaths in 2002 to 69 percent of total deaths in2030 (Mathers and Loncar, 2006).

* The diabetes and obesity trend is being countered by a fitness trend. People are more aware of health issues and are investing more in fitness. For example, there has been a significant growth in the number of fitness centres (24 percent increase) and their income (131 percent increase)in Australia during 2001-01 to 2004-05.
